85,000 People Demand Gov. Rick Snyder Fire Michigan State Police Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue
LANSING, Mich. – Color Of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization, will be joined by Progress Michigan and Representative Leslie Love, (D-Detroit) on October 20, for a tele-press conference on the demand for Michigan State Police Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue to be removed. The tele-press conference will follow the delivery of petitions to Governor Rick Snyder. The petition is urging the Governor to remove Col. Etue from her position as Michigan State Police Director after sharing a racist post online and a disturbing record of failing to hold police accountable for killing Black people.
The petition delivery and tele-press conference come after Gov. Snyder has failed to take any consequential disciplinary action against Etue, ordering only five-day pay dock for Etue on Thursday—a slap on the wrist. During the tele-press conference, activists will reiterate their demand for Governor Snyder to fire Etue and also call for systemic changes as well as an external investigation into the department’s handling of Damon Grimes’ death.

“Governor Snyder has a decision to make–which side of history does he want to be on? Colonel Etue has made her decision. NFL players who have kneeled during the national anthem have used their national stage to bring attention to an epidemic of systemic violence against Black and Brown people. Colonel Etue used her stage to racially attack these brave men as ‘ingrates’ and ‘degenerates’ for voicing their opinions. And behind those words lay a disturbing record of failing to hold police accountable for killing Black people and overseeing a department that is severely lacking in diversity. Michigan needs leadership that will work with communities to end racism not denigrate and silence those who are calling for change.” – Rashad Robinson, Executive Director, Color of Change
